Covert School

Active Participation + A Positive Environment = Successful Learning

Nellie P. Covert School provides positive academic learning experiences as well as behavioral health and social skills growth for students with emotional disabilities.  Students at Covert School are referred by school districts across southern Arizona.  The goal for students who attend Covert School is for them to return to their home school.

"We have committed, enthusiastic and highly qualified staff members who are dedicated to helping our students perform as well as possible and take pride in their educational achievements," said Judy Schmitt,  principal of Covert School.  "We also have a high level of support from our parents, who are responsive to the daily feedback we provide about their child's progress."

There are currently 40 students in grades K-12 enrolled at Covert School. Classrooms are divided into elementary, middle and high school levels.  The school day begins at 8:10 a.m. and concludes at 2:15 p.m.  "We have so many children at so many different levels, and each of them is engaged and working at his or her own level," adds Judith.  "All of our teachers are highly experienced special education teachers."

The Covert School after school program is the only one of its kind in Pima County.  The daily schedule includes homework help time, snacks, art or gym time and and optional intramural sports programs that promote sportsmanship and teamwork.

Students and faculty at Covert School hosted a "Fall into Italy" luncheon this past fall in the newly renovated Covert School kitchen.
