S.T.A.R. is the acronym for the Skills Training And Respite
Program. The S.T.A.R. Program is designed to help youth
between the ages of 1 to 17 years old who have behavioral
health issues, such as Attention Deficit Disorder, Attention
Deficit Hyperactive Disorder, Oppositional Defiance Disorder,
and more. We offer a variety of services to reduce caregiver
stress and/or to increase the skill base of youth enrolled
in the program.
S.T.A.R. Programs exist throughout the Northern and
Western Regions of Arizona including: Mohave, Yavapai,
Coconino, Navajo & Apache Counties.
If your child is between the ages of 1 and 17-years old,
currently enrolled in AHCCCS, typically has behavioral
health issues and is enrolled in a state run
clinic such as West Yavapai Guidance Clinic, Mohave
Mental Health or The Guidance Center, they are eligible
for referral to our program. Please contact your case
manager or therapist about enrolling your child.
Services
Day Respite Care
Our main goal through this service is to offer the primary
caregiver and client a period of relief. Children will be
placed in appropriate social groups after school or on the
weekends where they will participate in recreation-based
activities while their primary caregivers use this time as
best suits their needs.
Overnight Respite Care
Overnight Respite Care is staffed exclusively by contracted
foster licensed homes that are happy to take youth into their
home for a weekend. This is an extended version of Day Respite Care, and very similar in that they are in appropriate social groups. The main purpose of this service is to offer
a period of rest and relief to the caregiver.
Personal Care
The purpose of this service is to work closely in an intensive
one-on-one capacity with a client, helping them carry
out their daily living tasks and learning how to do so. It
is a thorough and intensive level of one-on-one support
for children in need of certain skills before successfully
participating in a group.
Skills Training Groups
While families can benefit from a period of relief when the
youth is enrolled in this service, it is not Respite. Skills
Training Groups are specifically designed to teach youth a
variety of age appropriate skills and lessons such as: How
to Tie Your Shoes, How to Use the Library, How to Accept
No for an Answer. These groups often include teamwork
oriented, problem solving games.
Individualized Skills Training
Designed to cultivate Life Skills, Individualized Training is
for youth who cannot yet enter into the group setting and
need to build some basic social skills first. It is not as
intensive as Personal Care.
Trips for Kids
Through mountain biking, STAR youth are able to learn and practice many life skills including self-care, healthy recreation, bike mechanics, trail etiquette, and environmental stewardship. Click here to learn more about Trips for Kids .
