Each November is celebrated as National Adoption Month. This year, Arizona’s Children Association supported 96 adoptions statewide during the month of November. For adoptive parents Kevin (son of AzCA Board Member Tom Wisz) and Jason, they found that adopting their two-year-old daughter, Kate, on National Adoption Day in Phoenix came right after they were legally able to petition for adoption. Kate came to their family almost two years ago as an infant with an exceptional amount of medical needs.
When asked about their experience as foster parents, Kevin shared that it was, at times, extremely challenging but they have also learned a lot about trauma along the way. Kate was the first and only child in their home and while she was an infant – it was not a traditional baby experience. After countless doctor’s visits, therapy and other services needed to care for Kate, they were able to make significant progress seeing a complete 360○ change in Kate’s health and development.
“At the end of the day, it is about what is in the best interest of a child. Patience is a necessary skill we practiced the most and ultimately helped us become Kate’s forever home.”
